Customer photo review of Cosmos Roots - Chocolate

After my bulbs laid around in their bag for about a week on my front porch I finally got em planted. Going on almost two weeks of growth now. Bama zone 8

    Cosmos Roots - Chocolate

Despite the reviews, I took a chance on these tubers since they were on sale in May. I bought 2 sets of 2 that gave me 6 pieces instead of 4. From there I: -Soaked them for 1 to 2 hours in plain water -Planted them in damp potting mix soil in pots. The small tubers in 4" plastic and the larger ones in clay pots -Saw sprouts in 2 weeks in the plastic pots. These were under grow lights in my basement. -Clay potted ones took longer(3-4 weeks) One was under the lights and one was outside. -Barely watered them until sprouts really got growing So far the ones under the lights are doing the best and are about 4" tall. No blooms yet. I am in San Francisco and we have cool summers so I think that is why the grow light ones are doing better. I plan on setting them outside later this summer. Hope my experience helps and happy growing!

Unfortunately I purchased 4 bulbs of these and none of them grew. I planted them in time, and different areas of the garden and not one emerged. All the other varieties I have grown are from seed have and are thriving. I was most excited about the chocolate ones though

Store owner replied: Hello Brenda. Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that your Chocolate Cosmos roots did not grow, especially when the rest of your garden is thriving. Chocolate Cosmos are best planted after the danger of frost has passed in warm, well-drained soil. They can be slow to emerge in spring, and cool, overly wet soil may cause the roots to decline before new growth appears. Once established, they thrive in full sun with consistent moisture and good drainage. We are glad we had the opportunity to provide a resolution. At Eden Brothers, we stand behind our products and are committed to helping our gardeners succeed. Thank you for your feedback, and we hope you'll enjoy better success with future plantings!

I got 40+ seeds & bulbs from here, these are the only ones, including very finicky venus fly trap seeds, that did not grow.

Store owner replied: Hello Gulsun. Thank you for your time to write us a review. We are sorry these did not do well for you. In Zone 6, Chocolate Cosmos are best planted after the danger of frost has passed, once the soil has warmed and drains well. They can be slow to emerge in spring, and cool, overly wet soil may cause the roots to decline before new growth appears. Providing well-drained soil and consistent moisture during establishment gives them the best chance for success. We are glad we had the opportunity to work with you and provide a resolution for both your Chocolate Cosmos roots and the Venus flytrap seeds. Thank you for giving us the chance to make things right and for sharing your positive experience as well. Your feedback helps us continue improving for all gardeners!

I received three roots. Only one is growing and thriving. The other two never grew.

Store owner replied: Hello Floridagirl. Thank you for your review for us. We are sorry to hear that only one of your roots grew, though we're glad to hear that it is thriving! In Zone 10, Chocolate Cosmos can sometimes be slow to emerge, and newly planted roots may be affected by excessive moisture, poor drainage, or periods of intense heat while they are becoming established. These plants generally prefer well-drained soil and can spend several weeks developing roots before showing significant top growth. Even under favorable conditions, not every root may establish successfully. We are glad we were able to connect with you directly and provide a resolution. At Eden Brothers, we stand behind our products and appreciate the opportunity to make things right. Thank you for your feedback and for giving these beauties a place in your garden!

I've purchased tubers and bulbs from Eden Brother's before and never had an issue. I decided to take a chance on these despite the poor reviews. Hopefully Eden Brother's can make it right and send replacements.

Store owner replied: Hello Waterlilly. Thank you for your review of Eden Brothers! We greatly appreciate you sharing your feedback, so we can better meet the needs of our customers. These plants can be quite sensitive, and they don’t always handle hot, humid summer conditions well. In your area, the combination of intense heat, strong sun, and high humidity can stress the roots, slow establishment, or even cause rot before the plants have a chance to settle in. They generally do best in climates with warm days but cooler, drier nights, so planting in your warm months makes it difficult for them to thrive. For better results, they’re often more successful when started during cooler, less humid times of year. After speaking with our Customer Service Team, it seems we were able to resolve this for you. Thanks for your time in bringing this to our attention!

I received my cosmos roots and kept them in the box until I was ready to plant them. When I took them out, they were shriveled. I’ve only grown them once before so I assumed they’d be fine, but they weren’t. They haven’t grown and upon investigating, they didn’t even begin to take root. I grew them last year without a problem. Disappointing.

I followed directions exactly but roots looked very dry. I thought they would revive, but alas, nothing came up.

Are these hard to grow? I ordered some and planted a few weeks ago. So far, no sign of life. I was wondering if I could find some seeds for these instead of roots but I don't see them on the site either. Cosmos normally are not difficult to grow and they grow as wildflowers in my ditch and reseed. Is this a different kind? Thanks for the review who shared pictures, I can now see what they will look like if they do emerge.

Store owner replied: Hello Cheryl. Thank you for your review of Eden Brothers! We appreciate you taking the time to reach out about your experience. Chocolate Cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) is quite different from the common cosmos varieties that grow easily from seed. It’s a sterile species, so it doesn’t produce viable seeds, only tubers, which is why seeds aren’t available. These roots can be slow to sprout, often taking 3 to 6 weeks, especially in cool or wet soil. They need warmth, sun, and well-drained soil to grow and can rot if overwatered. While they’re more finicky at the start, once established, they produce beautiful, velvety blooms with a light chocolate scent. Certainly keep us updated! If this variety does not produce well for you, reach back out to us and we’ll be happy to work on a means of resolution with you. Thanks for reaching out!

Bought 4 of these. Both in one pkg arrived broken in dead pieces. In the other pkg, 1 was dried out & dead. 1 was fine, planted it immediately. Its been 2 months, it has barely even sprouted leaves. Poor quality. They did issue a refund, but I wouldnt recommend.

Planted 6 weeks ago. They never emerged. Not sure why?

I got a pack of 2 and potted them up at the same time, same soil. 1 of 2 did not grow at all. The other was doing well, put up some nice leaves and was big enough to move to its spot in the garden and it died within a couple of days. Very big bummer.

I was really excited about these, but only 2 of the 4 roots came up even though they were all given identical planting conditions. It's still too early in the season to see how well they do and bloom, but at least I've got green leaves so far from two of the tubers.
